Surfing in Noosa
Noosa is the ideal place for surfing. Warm waters and relatively calm swells make Noosa’s beaches the perfect location to enjoy the surfing experience.
Of course, the glorious sub-tropical Noosa climate also means it is the ideal location for surfing at any time of the year. The water is always warm and the swells are accommodating for beginners and advanced surfers alike.
Why Learn to Surf in Noosa?
Noosa’s northerly-facing beaches are more sheltered than other beaches. This means the gentle swells and breaks are often less than a metre high. This makes them ideal for learning to surf, or just enjoying a casual day of surfing without fear of being dumped under monster crashing waves.
You’ll find plenty of excellent surfing schools and classes operating along the Noosa Spit, Main Beach, or First Point Beach, as well as other locations in and around Noosa where the waves and swells work best for beginners.
More Advanced Surfing Options
If you’re already familiar with surfing and have some experience behind you, and you just want to get into the water to enjoy the waves, you might prefer the larger breaks available at Tea Tree Bay Beach, or even Granite Bay Beach. These are ideal beaches for more intermediate surfers.
For the more daring and more advanced surfing enthusiasts, head out to Johnson’s Beach. This is quite a windy location, so the swell is obviously higher and more challenging. Be warned, though. The ocean floor is quite rocky here, so you will need to think about wearing protective clothing and booties while you surf.
A short distance away from Noosa is Sunshine Beach, Peregian Beach and Coolum. The swells and breaks can be really spectacular along these stretches of the coast, but so can the strong rips. These beaches are patrolled, but it’s still wise to surf cautiously.
So if you’re an avid surfer or you're keen to learn how to surf, Noosa is the ideal location. Surfing in Noosa is spectacular on our many surf breaks, and the gentle waves in the sheltered beaches make it easier for anyone to master the basics of surfing quickly.
